ABOUT THE ARTISTS

OZOMATLI

ozomatli.jpg

In their fourteen years together as a band, celebrated Los Angeles culture-mashers Ozomatli have gone from being hometown heroes to being named U.S. State Department Cultural Ambassadors.  Ozomatli has always juggled two key identities. They are the voice of their city and they are citizens of the world.  Their music-- a notorious urban-Latino-and-beyond collision of hip hop and salsa, dancehall and cumbia, samba and funk, merengue and comparsa, East LA R&B and New Orleans second line, Jamaican ragga and Indian raga-- has long followed a key mantra: it will take you around the world by taking you around L.A.  This has never been truer for Ozo than it is in 2009. More than ever before, the band is both of the world and of L.A.

BASSNECTAR

bassnectar01.jpg

What started back in the mid nineties as an experiment fusing youth culture and social action has turned into a multi-faceted, multi-faced creature called Bassnectar. It is the brainchild of Lorin Ashton, and it exists as an open-sourced musical project that is as diverse as it is heavy, as raw as it is meticulous, and as fierce as it is imaginary.  Bassnectar combines sound and force with weight while spanning the spectrum of sonic style, covering every genre imaginable, and smashing it all into a collision of wobbling, perverted basslines, hypnotic hide-and-seek adventures, and pretty much anything that strikes his fancy. He calls the end product "omnitempo maximalism," which basically means no rules, no limitations, and no hesitation in fusing the familiar with the strange or the classic with the cutting edge.

GHOSTLAND OBSERVATORY

Ghostland.jpgGhostland Observatory is not a band, but an agreement between two friends to create something that not only heals their beat-driven hearts, but pleases their rock and roll souls. Taking the working man's approach,Ghostland Observatory spend countless hours in their south Austin studio. They have released two albums in less than a year, and have moved audiencesfrom coast to coast with their live performances and unique style. Ghostland Observatory is the duo of front man Aaron Behrens and producer/drummer Thomas Turner. Behrens' vocal style and stage performancesare unique and uncompromising, and he has drawn early comparisons to Freddie Mercury and Prince. Turner is heavily infl uenced by electronic artists such as Daft Punk, Laurent Garnier and Green Velvet, as well as rockers such as The Animals, David Bowie, and The Clash. With their spectral blend of electronics, drums, guitar and vocals, they have emerged with a sound that is the culmination of past influence and present inspiration, and can only be described as BALLSY.

YDRS.jpg
THE YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW

The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey through part of history that may or may not have existed – followed by an ambitious return to the emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary world. It’s a true story on stage: sword swallowers, dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry - all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual and sonic voodoo. Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild West in the late 1800's and slammed into the underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture.

theglitchmob.jpgTHE GLITCH MOB

Taking influences from hip-hop, rock and experimental electronic genres, The Glitch Mob have crafted a new form of futuristic dance music. Their wicked combination of ferocious bass, neck-snapping drums and complex melodies has earned them a worldwide grassroots fanbase. What started as a loose affiliation soon stuck as edIT, Ooah and Boreta found themselves frequently playing the same shows, and eventually collaborating during sets. Their live performance is a complete reimagination of the laptop DJ paradigm as they flow like a seasoned jazz trio – each taking the lead at intuitive moments –layering chords, vocal snippets and drum patterns into an overwhelming digital wall of sound.

YDRS.jpg
s a child growing up in a small village in Kenya, Sila remembers tuning in to a shortwave radio for the latest pop offerings from the West. By way of a faint, crackling radio signal, Sila first became acquainted with the guttural howls and shrieks of the Minister of Funk, James Brown. “One of the first James Brown songs I remember hearing on shortwave radio was ‘I Feel Good.’ Growing up very poor in my village and having a song like that play on the radio was very inspiring,” Sila, says. ||||| Embracing his African roots and his love of funk, Sila channeled James Brown for inspiration and six years later, with the help of his renowned cast of bandmates, he’s achieved success without having to compromise his heritage (he sings in both Swahili and English) or his musical tastes. “James Brown has always been someone who’s influenced me quite a bit. From his perseverance to his political life and his very poor background, it’s all been an inspiration to me. … His determination and the fact that he never gave up — I see that in me,” Sila says. “When I came here I never imagined I would sell out venues and entertain people in a way that James Brown entertained me. Believe me, I’m not saying I’m the next James Brown, but I do feel he’s in the soul of music.”
